Mand Training in ABA Therapy

At Autism Care Therapy, Mand Training is one of the essential techniques we use to help children with Autism develop meaningful communication skills. A "mand" is a request, such as asking for a toy, food, help, or even attention, based on a person's needs or desires.

Through Mand Training, we teach children how to express their wants and needs appropriately, leading to stronger communication, reduced frustration, and improved social interactions.

When might a BCBA target this skill?

When a learner is unable to consistently or effectively communicate their wants and needs.

Why is Mand Training Important?

Children with Autism often struggle to communicate their basic needs, which can lead to frustration or challenging behaviors. Mand Training focuses on empowering children to:

  • Request items, activities, or assistance effectively.
  • Initiate communication instead of relying only on responses.
  • Increase motivation for speaking or using communication devices.
  • Build a foundation for more complex language and social skills.

How Mand Training Works

Our Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and trained therapists:

  • Identify motivating items or activities that the child values.
  • Create opportunities throughout the day for the child to request what they want.
  • Prompt and reinforce attempts to communicate, whether verbally, with sign language, or through communication devices.
  • Gradually fade prompts as the child becomes more independent in their requests.
